After receiving filler, especially in your lips, you may notice some swelling. Don't worry! There are ways to lessen the swelling and make the healing process more comfortable.

Here's what you should do immediately following your procedure:

  • Use a cold pack: Place it on the swollen area to help reduce swelling. Remember not to put the ice or cold pack directly on your skin. Instead, wrap it in a clean cloth or towel. Leave it on for 20 minutes, then take it off for 20 minutes. You can do this up to five times a day.

  • Avoid exercise for the first 24 hours: This includes any kind of strenuous activity, such as running, or even less intense exercise, like pilates or yoga.

  • Avoid Alcohol: Alcohol can make bruising and swelling worse, so we recommend avoiding it for the first 12 hours following your procedure.

  • Skip the lipstick: For the first day after your injection, avoid putting on lipstick. You can use Aquaphor or Vaseline instead. Just make sure to apply it with a clean Q-Tip.

  • Don't rub or massage your lips: Do not massage your lips for 2 weeks after treatment as this can cause the filler to migrate.

  • Avoid sun exposure: Try to stay out of the sun for at least one week after filler treatment. This allows your skin to fully recover and adjust after treatment. If in the sun, always apply sunscreen to the area treated.

  • Take an antihistamine: Over-the-counter antihistamines like Zyrtec or Claritin can help control swelling.

  • Take Arnica for bruising: It's normal to see bruises form even two days after your treatment. They'll go away on their own, so there's no need to panic. You can take Arnica Montana, a natural supplement to help resolve at a faster rate; take 5 tablets three times per day (this can be started 1 week prior to injections).

  • For mild pain, take Tylenol: If you're in pain, Tylenol can help. But try to avoid aspirin or Ibuprofen, as they may cause more bruising. If you are experiencing severe or increasing pain that won't go away, call the office right away.

Two Weeks Post Injection

After two weeks, when your treated area is fully healed, it's important to keep an eye out for any lumps or bumps that may have formed. If you do notice any, don't panic! Simply massage the area with consistent pressure for two minutes, up to five times a day. If you're still experiencing discomfort, or any welts, redness, or itching, never hesitate to give our office a call.

Also, please keep in mind that your skin may take some time to settle after the procedure. We recommend waiting a minimum of two weeks before receiving any facial, skin care treatment, or laser treatments to the face.

We recommend using a medical-grade skincare system to maintain and enhance your results. Please contact your provider or one of our staff members for a consultation and product recommendations.

Contact our office immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms: white discoloration of injected areas, unusual bruising, severe or increasing pain, redness, increasing warmth or coolness to touch, severe swelling, itching, blisters, difficulty swallowing or smiling, fever, or chills. If you notice any of these symptoms, call our office immediately at (312) 202-9000 to speak with a provider.
